distinct practices
The thing that makes our church different from most others is that leadership is by way of a group of "elders". None of these elders is more important than the others. In that sense this church has no single leader - we humbly seek to make Christ the leader, or head, of this church in a practical way, seen by all. Another thing which makes us different from most other churches is that we do not have an ordained "clergy" as distinct from the regular (or "lay") members of the church. We seek to recognise and use the Spirit-given abilities of people in our church. While we support the idea that formal Bible study in a specialist college or seminary can be very valuable, this is not necessary before people are allowed to exercise their gifts in the church. For example, our team of Bible teachers is made up of people with the Spirit-given ability to teach Scripture, whether or not they have had formal Bible college education.
One result of this is that opportunity is given people, both men and women, to work in the church in line with their spiritual gifting.
While this church is part of a worldwide family of churches, it is totally independent in the way it is run. That is, it is governed by our elders - who seek to lead by example. This church is not answerable to any other church or governing body. However, we highly value the close fellowship we have with other churches. A number of the people in this church take part in inter-church activities and outreaches.
mission statement
We aim to encourage each other to:
- Worship with Reverence
- Evangelise with Confidence
- Learn with Eagerness
- Serve with Faithfulness
That the name of the Lord may be lifted high.
changing yet unchanged
The present Chapel was built in 1973, but this church has been functioning in Hamilton for over 100 years. Right until the present, Whitiora has tried to be relevant to a changing society. So some of the ways it has evangelised, for example, have changed. As a church though, we are committed to beliefs and principles which are unchanging.
part of a worldwide movement
Whitiora Bible church is one of a network of about 240 churches scattered throughout New Zealand. This kind of church is found in almost every country of the world as well. For more information about the Brethren movement go to www.brethren.org.nz
